Fifteen Islamic State fighters killed by Iraqi jets in western Mosul
Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi fighter jets have killed several Islamic State militants and destroyed their weapons in west of Mosul, the War Media Cell reported.
In a statement on Saturday, the WMC said “air force killed fifteen IS militants, including seven foreigners, and destroyed two booby-trapped vehicles near al-Jomhouri hospital in west of Mosul.”
On Friday, Federal Police said troops took control over 30 percent of al-Shifa, the last district held by Islamic State militants near western Mosul’s Old City.
Last week, Iraqi troops announced recapturing of al-Zanjili district, located north of the Old City, which is home to the Grand Nuri al-Kabeer mosque, from which IS Supreme Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared establishing caliphate in 2014.
More than 1200 Islamic State militants, including snipers and leaders, were have been killed since launch of offensives in western Mosul, Federal Police previously announced.
Less than 1000 fighters are believed to be remaining in the Old City, according to commanders from the Iraqi leadership and the allied U.S.-led coalition.
In January, the eastern side of Mosul was retaken after three months of battles. Another offensive was launched in February to retake the western side of the city.
