Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi pro-government troops have killed five Islamic State members in an ambush, southwest of Kirkuk province, a security source from the troops said on Sunday.

Speaking to AlSumaria News, the source said, “information received from the intelligence showed that some Islamic State members will infiltrate into one of the villages, southwest of Kirkuk.”

An ambush was set, according to the source, “by the 16th brigade of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) in al-Yorgon region in al-Rashad town, southwest of Kirkuk. A truck carrying the militants was targeted.”

“Fire was opened against the truck, leaving five militants killed, while the rest managed to escape,” the source who preferred anonymity, added.

Last week, the Iraqi military said troops managed to killed five prominent Islamic State members who took part in the attack against a village in southwest of Kirkuk

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country.

Thousands of Islamic State militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.
