Diyala (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi security forces arrested on Monday three senior leaders of the Islamic State terrorist group in Diyala province, a well-placed security source said.

Speaking to Baghdad Today, the source said that intelligence forces arrested the trio during a security operation in different parts of Diyala.

The source added that the three terrorists were assuming senior positions in Islamic State’s self-proclaimed Diyala Wilayat (province).

In January 2015, Iraqi forces announced liberation of Diyala province from Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The province has seen months of fighting between Iraqi troops and IS militants especially in the Jalawla and Saadiyah areas in the province’s north and areas near the town of Muqdadiyah.
