Iraqi child killed, father injured as Kurds celebrate election win

Kirkuk (Iraqinews.com) – A four-year-old child was killed while his father was wounded after unidentified gunmen opened fire at them during Kurdish celebrations of election win.
“The child and his parents were found inside their own car in the Shorja neighborhood in northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk with the father suffering from a fatal shot and the mother going into a coma. Their child, 4, was killed in the attack,” a security source told Baghdad Today.
The slain child was identified as Harim Ghonbar Mohamed Amin, the source pointed out.
Iraq’s electoral commission announced on Tuesday preliminary results of votes for parliamentary elections in Kirkuk.
According to the commission, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan came first in the mixed Arab, Kurdish and Turkmen province. The Arab Alliance came second, and the Turkmen Front came in the third position.
Saturday’s elections were the first in Iraq since the defeat of Islamic State last year by Iraqi forces and a U.S.-led coalition.
The elections were originally scheduled for September 2017, but were delayed due to the country’s fight against Islamic State, which ended in December 2017 with the recapture of their remaining territories.
