 Iraqi police say killed 16 Islamic State members after raids in Kirkuk

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi police said Friday their operations against Islamic State extremists’ havens in the province of Kirkuk, north of the country, left 16 militants dead.

The Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service said n a statement its operations designed to purge Wadi al-Shai region in Kirkuk, which launched Thursday morning, “left 16 Daesh (Islamic State) terrorists and destroyed 21 hideouts and 14 underground tunnels.

It said the region  had been used by the militant group as a launching point for hostilities against civilians and security services.

Earlier on Friday, Iraqi security media said an investigation was opened into the death of an Iraqi police member by friendly fire from the U.S.-coalition fighter jets which were backing the Iraqi forces in their operations in Kirkuk.
