Iraqi troops arrest man wearing explosive belt north of Baghdad
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi troops arrested on Sunday a man wearing an explosive belt north of Baghdad, a military command said.
In a statement, the Baghdad Operations Command said the terrorist was nabbed at al-Tarmiyah area north of Baghdad with an explosive belt, a bomb and a gun in his possession.
On Saturday, a security source said five Islamic State members were killed in an airstrike on al-Tarmiyah area.
“Army jets launched an airstrike on al-Tarmiyah area, targeting a rest house of the Islamic State,” the source told Baghdad Today website.
Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State Sunni extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.
The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over 3 million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
The Iraqi capital has seen almost daily bombings and armed attacks against security members, paramilitary troops and civilians since a government campaign, backed by al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) and a U.S.-led international coalition, has been fighting the Islamic State group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.
