Iraqi troops carry out military reinforcements along borders with Syria
Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi security troops have made military reinforcements along the borders with Syria, a source from the border guards in Anbar said on Sunday.
Speaking to Almaalomah website, the source said “Iraqi troops are carrying out military reinforcements as well as erecting unprecedented security barriers along the borders with Syria to prevent Islamic State militants infiltration and limit smuggling operations, while the Syrian army invade Islamic State locations near Qaim town, west of Anbar.”
The target behind the reinforcement, according to the source, “is prevent infiltration of whoever escapes battles in Syria toward the western regions.” The reinforcements “were started from Rutba reached to the Anbar and Mosul.”
Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has said troops managed to secure the Syrian side of borders and eliminate Islamic State members in Upper Euphrates. He also made instructions to secure the Iraqi borders to limit the infiltration of the terrorists.
The Iraqi-Syrian borders are under the control of joint troops of military and border guards.
Iraqi warplanes launched, earlier this month, a new wave of air raids against outposts of the Islamic State group in Syria.
In April, Abadi denied intentions to intervene within Syrian affairs, saying airstrikes against Islamic State will continue.
Iraq had previously announced launching airstrikes against IS locations in Syria. This came after Abadi said security troops will follow IS militants in the whole region, not only in Iraq.
