Iraq’s forced disappearance cases at more than 7600 since 2017
A number of persons were arrested in Baqubah.
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Cases of Iraqis who have been subjected to force disappearances since 2017 have stood at more than 7600, an Iraqi human rights official was quoted saying.
Russia Today quoted Anas al-Ezzawi, a member of the Iraqi human rights commission, saying that “7663 cases of forced disappearance were recorded in a two and half a year, out of whom 652 have been confirmed at prison”.
According to the official, those numbers, however, do not include those who went missing during Islamic State militant’s reign, and do not also cover cases from the Kurdistan Region.
He decried impediments to efforts to locate disappeared persons, as authorities in charge of prisons decline to cooperate citing security considerations.
