Iraqi troops arrest a suspected Islamic State militant
Fallujah (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi security forces arrested on Sunday an Islamic State fighter during a security campaign in Fallujah district in Anbar, the Military Intelligence Directorate announced.
In a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Alghad Press website, the directorate said that the IS fighter took part in the terrorist attacks against security forces in Fallujah and Kirkuk.
The terrorist also used to terrorize citizens and seize their property before the liberation of Fallujah from the extremist group, the statement added.
Iraq declared the collapse of Islamic State’s territorial influence in November 2017 with the recapture of Rawa, a city on Anbar’s western borders with Syria, which was the group’s last bastion in Iraq.
The Islamic State group appeared on the international scene in 2014 when it seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, declaring the establishment of an Islamic “caliphate” from Mosul city.
Later on, the group has become notorious for its brutality, including mass killings, abductions and beheadings, prompting the U.S. to lead an international coalition to destroy it.
Isolated cells believed to be linked to the Islamic State group remain active in some parts of the country. In recent weeks, suspected Islamic State insurgents have carried out several attacks targeting security forces across Iraq.
