PMU fighter, IS combatant killed in Diyala encounters
Diyala (IraqiNews.com) A trooper from pro-government militias and an Islamic State member were killed Monday in encounters east of Diyaka province, local sources said.
A local source told Alsumaria News that a member of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) was killed and three others were wounded in an attack by IS members at Mansouriyat al-Jabal village, 43 kilometers east of Baqubah.
According to the source, security troops went on combing the area after the attack.
Another source told the network that a “dangerous” IS member was als killed in encounters with forces from the army’s 5th division near Sheikhi village, 22 kilometers north of Baqubah.
The militant was an Iraqi national and was wanted for terrorism-related charges, according to the source.
Iraqi government forces and allied militias exchanged attacks with Islamic State members over the past few months. The clashes left some dead on both sides.
Iraqi forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and PMUs, are currently focusing on recapturing Mosul, Islamic State’s largest stronghold in Iraq. It expected that the government will proceed to clear other IS pockets in the rest of Iraq once the campaign in Mosul, entering its fifth month, ends.
