Diyala (IraqiNews.com) – Two Iraqi civilians were wounded Monday in a bomb explosion in the eastern province of Diyala, a security source was quoted as saying.

“A roadside bomb targeted a private vehicle on a road between Abu Sayda and al-Abbara districts in Baqubah, some 50 km northeast of Baghdad, leaving two civilians wounded,” the source told the Arabic-language Alghad Press website.

“The wounded civilians were moved to a nearby hospital for treatment,” the source said, adding that security forces launched a probe into the bomb attack.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over five million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
