Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi security troops have tightened measures along the borders with Syria to prevent infiltration of Islamic State members into Iraq, as Syrian forces progress toward the militants locations, a security source was quoted saying on Tuesday.

“Security troops, tasked with securing the borders between Iraq and Syria, heightened measures, as Syrian forces progress toward IS locations near the borders,” the source from the paramilitary troops in Anbar province said.

“Surveillance cameras have been fixed within the precautionary measures,” he said “security troops were deployed at the regions near the borders to foil any potential attacks.”

Earlier today, Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has said troops managed to secure the Syrian side of borders and eliminate Islamic State members in Upper Euphrates.

On Monday, Abadi made instructions to secure the Iraqi borders to limit the infiltration of the terrorists.

The Iraqi-Syrian borders are under the control of joint troops of military and border guards.

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country.

Thousands of IS militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.
