Suicide bomber killed before attacking army in Ramadi
Ramadi (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army forces killed an Islamic State suicide bomber before attacking troops west of Anbar’s city of Ramadi, a senior commander said Friday.
The militant, wearing an explosive belt, attempted to attack an army location west of the Kilo 35 region west of Ramadi, according to Anbar Operations chief, Mahmoud al-Falahi.
He told Alsumaria News that troops shot the militant dead and later defused his explosive belt.
Iraqi forces recaptured Ramadi from Islamic State militants in 2016. Troops also recently took over the town of Annah, a major IS haven near the Syrian borders, last month. The neighboring tons of Rawa and Qaim have now become the last Islamic State areas of influence in Iraq after Iraqi joint troops took over Kirkuk’s Hawija on Thursday.
Iraq launched a U.S.-backed campaign in 2016 to regain control over areas occupied by IS since 2014. The campaign had recaptured the Islamic State’s former capital, Mosul, early July.
