Twelve persons killed, injured in armed attack, bomb blasts in Mosul

“Unknown gunmen attacked, early on Sunday, a joint security checkpoint in Bab al-Toub region, in central Mosul, and opened fire against personnel,” Cap. Ahmed al-Taher, of Nineveh police, told the Turkish Anadolu agency.
“The attack left a soldier from Nineveh’s al-Hashd al-Shaabi [Popular Mobilization Forces] and two Federal Troops personnel killed. Their weapons were stolen before the gunmen ran away,” he added.
According to Taher, the attack is likely to be carried out by Islamic State militants who still exist in the Old City, which was liberated few months ago. “However, it was not totally combed as it has tens of hideouts, tunnels and houses, which troops could not access yet.”
Moreover, a source from local police said three persons were killed, while six others were wounded in blasts caused by bombs from IS war remnants in Mosul.
“A bomb went off killing a worker in Bab Lakash region, west of Mosul,” the source told Alghad Press on Sunday.
Another one targeted a family in al-Shalalat region, east of Mosul, leaving a child killed and the rest of the family’s six members wounded, the source added.
“A third bomb exploded in Tal al-Samn region, west of Mosul, leaving a child killed,” the source said adding that all bombs were previously planted by IS during war against security troops.
On Saturday, three children and three security personnel were killed in bomb blasts in the city.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over IS militants, who had held the second largest Iraqi city since 2014, on July 10.
114 Iraqi civilians were killed, while 244 others were wounded as result of terrorism, violence and armed conflicts, according to a monthly release by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), issued on Wednesday.
