Two civilians wounded as roadside bomb explodes in Baghdad

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Two civilians were wounded Tuesday in a bomb attack in northern Baghdad, a security source was quoted as saying.

“A roadside bomb exploded early today in al-Taji district in northern Baghdad, leaving two civilians wounded,” the source told Alghad Press website.

According to the source, the two civilians were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and a probe was opened into the attack.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State (IS) militant group, in most cases, is responsible for attacks targeting crowded areas, including markets, cafes and mosques across Iraq.

A total of 76 people were killed and 129 others were injured due to acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflicts during the month of June, casualty figures recorded by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Diyala was the worst affected Governorate, according to the report, with 52 civilian casualties (16 killed, 36 injured), then came Kirkuk (10 killed, 36 injured) then Baghdad (19 killed and 18 injured).

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over over million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
