Anbar (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi security forces killed on Tuesday two Islamic State terrorists in the western province of Anbar, an Iraqi mayor said.

Shaker Mahmoud, the mayor of Anbar’s Al-Ameriya district, told Al-Ahd news website that an army force, backed by policemen and tribal fighters, clashed with two IS militants, who infiltrated into al-Abar city in western the district coming from neighboring Syria.

The two terrorists were killed in the gunfight, the mayor added.

Earlier in the day, an IS suicide bomber was killed while driving his motorbike in al-Qa’im district, west of Anbar.

Between June 2014 and December 2017, Islamic State seized large areas of Iraq and led a campaign of widespread violence and systematic violations of international human rights and humanitarian law.

Former Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi declared the end of military operations against Islamic State in Iraq on December 9, 2017 three years after the militant group captured about a third of Iraq’s territory. On July 10 that year, the former premier had formally declared victory over Islamic State extremists in Mosul, which served as the terrorists’ main urban stronghold.
