Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State militant and two suicide attackers were killed as Iraqi troops repulsed an attack in Baghdad, a command announced on Tuesday.

“Troops of the Baghdad Operations Command managed, today, to kill two suicide attackers wearing suicide belts and an IS member, who was with them, in al-Dhabitiya region, north of the capital,” Maj. Gen. Jalil al-Rubei’y, the commander, told AlSumaria News.

The militants, according to Rubei’y, were intending to carry out operations in Baghdad. Their weapons were seized.

Earlier today, a civilian was killed, while four others were wounded as a bomb exploded near a market in al-Yusufiya region, south of Baghdad. Moreover, a roadside bomb exploded while an army patrol was passing at al-Tarmiyah district in northern Baghdad, leaving a soldier dead and two others wounded.

On Saturday, the command announced killing a suicide bomber in an agricultural region, north of Baghdad.

Thousands of IS militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition, was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group.

According to the monthly release by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), a total of 69 civilians, excluding police personnel, were killed, while 142 others were wounded in December due to acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict across the country.

The worst affected province was Baghdad with 122 civilian casualties (24 killed, 98 injured). Salahuddin ranked the second place, with 7 killed and 25 injured, then Kirkuk came third with 15 killed and 6 injured.
