Unidentified gunmen kill Iraqi soldier in Diyala province
Diyala (IraqiNews.com) – An Iraqi soldier was killed on Saturday night when armed men launched an attack on a security checkpoint in the eastern province of Diyala, a security source was quoted saying.
“A security checkpoint came under attack by unidentified gunmen near the Hussein al-Hamadi village, some 15 km southwest of Baqubah, leaving a solider dead,” the source told the Baghdad Today news website on Sunday.
“The security forces launched a probe into the incident and a manhunt was launched for the culprits,” the source added.
In January 2015, Iraqi forces announced liberation of Diyala province from Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.
The province has seen months of fighting between Iraqi troops and IS militants especially in the Jalawla and Saadiyah areas in the province’s north and areas near the town of Muqdadiyah.
