4 killed, 27 injured in gas explosion in building in Duhok
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – An Iraqi security source said on Tuesday that four people were killed and dozens were injured in an explosion of the gas system in a students’ dormitory in Duhok governorate in northern Iraq.
The Civil Defense Directorate in Duhok governorate announced that four people were killed and 27 others were injured because of the explosion.
The Civil Defense director in Duhok mentioned that two security personnel are among the victims.
A security source explained that the accident took place in the early hours of Tuesday, as a result of a gas leak in a student’s dormitory, which caused a huge explosion and fire.
The source indicated that firefighters rushed to the scene, and after great efforts, they managed to put out the fire, while search operations for the victims are still underway.
Three residential buildings were collapsed and several cars parked around the buildings were severely damaged due to a similar accident last Thursday when a huge gas tank placed on top of a building exploded in a neighborhood in the eastern part of Sulaymaniyah city in northern Iraq.
Following these incidents, the Governor of Erbil mentioned that the Prime Minister of Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, directed to stop using all forms of gas system, in addition to a thorough investigation where all the concerned parties will be involved.
