Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Four Iraqi workers were injured on Wednesday in a mine explosion in Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan region of Iraq.
A cleaning company in Erbil said that four of its workers were injured after a mine exploded while they were working inside the sewage network in Shaqlawa district.
The director of the cleaning company mentioned in a statement that the accident occurred while the company’s workers were cleaning the waterways in the Shaqlawa district where a mine exploded and injured four workers.
“The workers are from the district, and they were taken to the hospital immediately after the accident,” the director of the cleaning company explained, adding that the mine could be from the time of the former Iraqi regime.
The Directorate for Mine Affairs in the Iraqi Ministry of Environment revealed earlier that about 2,700 square kilometers of the area of Iraq contain mines.
Most of these mines and unexploded ordnance are either from the war between Iraq and Iran, or from the period when ISIS invaded some areas of the country during the summer of 2014.
