Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – 7,000 divorce cases were recorded in Iraq during October only, according to official statistics issued by the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq.

The Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq mentioned that 6,987 divorce cases were recorded in the Iraqi governorates, except the Kurdistan region, during the month of October, according to Rudaw News.

The data revealed that 5208 divorce cases were ratified after they occurred outside Iraqi courts, while 1779 divorce cases through judicial rulings were recorded in Iraqi courts.

On the other hand, Iraq recorded during the same period 27,191 marriage contracts, including 6009 ratifications for marriage contracts took place outside courts.

Specialists say that there are various reasons behind the increasing rates of divorce in Iraq. These reasons include the shared housing with the husband’s family which causes problems between the spouses, the difficulty of finding job opportunities, infidelity, the repercussions of early marriage, and financial pressures on the family.

Last June, the United Nations issued a report revealing a significant increase in the rates of early marriage for girls in Iraq, warning of its negative impacts.

“According to the results of the Iraqi Women Integrated Social and Health Survey, the percentage of women getting married before the age of 18 in Iraq reached 25.5 percent, and 22.6 percent in Kurdistan region,” the United Nations Population Fund said in a statement.
