Armed factions target US base near Erbil International Airport

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – A drone attack targeted a military base near Erbil International Airport in the Kurdistan region of Iraq on Sunday.
Iraqi armed factions announced on Sunday that they attacked a military base housing US forces near Erbil International Airport in northern Iraq.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq said in a brief statement on Telegram that the attack comes in response to Israel’s massacres against Palestinians in Gaza.
The area has been targeted several times in the past few weeks, amid escalating tension in the region because of the ongoing war in Gaza that broke out last October.
Since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas, tension has generally escalated in the region on several fronts, including Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Lebanon, where armed factions supported by Iran exist.
Military bases housing US forces in Iraq and Syria have been subjected to more than 150 attacks by armed factions since October 17.
Last week, these factions threatened to begin a second phase of attacks, including more intense strikes in the Mediterranean Sea, to besiege Israel’s ports.
On the other hand, US forces carried out strikes in both countries on the headquarters of those armed groups, threatening more if the attacks continued.
The Iraqi government started demanding the departure of the international coalition forces led by the United States from Iraq to reduce regional tension.
Washington deploys 2,500 soldiers within the framework of the coalition forces that provide advice and assistance to local forces to prevent the return of ISIS, which in 2014 took control of large areas of the country before its defeat in 2017.
