Baghdad supports Syria’s return to the Arab League
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The spokesperson of the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Al-Sahaf, confirmed on Wednesday that Iraq still supports Syria’s return to the Arab League.
“Iraq is still supporting Syria’s return to its seat in the Arab League… the integration of the Arab house is positively reflected on its parties,” Al-Sahaf said.
On Tuesday, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) called for a meeting to discuss the possibility of Syria’s return to the Arab League.
Arab media outlets mentioned that the meeting is scheduled to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Friday, where foreign ministers of the GCC countries, Iraq, Egypt, and Jordan would participate.
Meanwhile, Doha announced it received an invitation from the General Secretariat of the GCC to attend a meeting next Friday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to exchange views on the possibility of Syria’s return to the Arab League.
Doha indicated that there are many developments regarding the situation in Syria and the Arab views toward Syria’s return to the Arab League.
Saudi Arabia plans to invite the Syrian President, Bashar Al-Assad, to the Arab League summit in May.
The Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Faisal bin Farhan, is expected to travel to Damascus in the coming weeks to officially invite Al-Assad to attend the summit.
Media outlets emphasized that Syria and Saudi Arabia agreed to open their two embassies after more than ten years of severing relations.
