Cardinal Louis Sako returns to Baghdad
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Having lived in exile in northern Iraq for nine months, Cardinal Louis Sako has returned to Baghdad. The directive for his return was given by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.
As he celebrated his first mass in the nation’s capital, the cardinal—a well-known member of the Iraqi Christian community—was greeted with great warmth upon his return. Following a period of political unrest and worries for his safety that resulted in his flight from Baghdad last year, he is back.
Tensions between Cardinal Sako and Rayan al-Kildani, the leader of the Babylon Movement political party and the man behind the creation of the Babylon Brigades militia, are at the center of the disagreement. Leadership battles and property issues have allegedly been the source of the two individuals’ dislike.
As the Patriarch of the Chaldean Church in Iraq, Cardinal Louis Sako will continue to assume his position.
