COI recovers $10 million in cash, real estate in three Iraqi governorates
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The head of the Iraqi Commission of Integrity (COI), Haidar Hanoun, announced on Monday the recovery of large amounts of money and real estate taken over in the governorates of Baghdad, Najaf and Anbar, Alsumaria News reported.
Hanoun said in a press conference that the COI started taking measures to identify illicit gains by officials, indicating that laws are being amended and will be sent to the cabinet and then the parliament for ratification.
The COI’s head pointed out that real estate money has been recovered by a special committee in Najaf governorate, explaining that 3,980 properties acquired by people through a decision issued by the dissolved Revolutionary Command Council (RCC) have been recovered in the same governorate.
The Iraqi official illustrated that the COI recovered $5 million and two vehicles that were taken over by the former director of the National Board of Pensions (NBP).
Hanoun added that the COI also seized $5 million from the technical assistant of Baghdad’s governor, thanking the efforts of the Iraqi judiciary to support the work of the COI.
The Head of the COI was received on Monday by the Iraqi President, Abdul Latif Rashid, where he reviewed the COI’s efforts to prosecute corrupt officials and recover smuggled funds.
The Iraqi President stressed the importance of the COI’s role in confronting corruption, prosecuting corrupt officials and recovering smuggled Iraqi funds.
The Iraqi President called for reviewing the financial legislation to limit corruption, emphasizing the Iraqi Presidency’s support for the efforts of the COI to fight corruption.
