EU appreciates Iraqi government’s commitment to protecting Yazidis
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The European Union confirmed it appreciates the Iraqi government’s commitment to protecting and improving Yazidis, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, mentioned in a statement that the European Union stands firmly behind the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Iraq, with full respect for its ethnic and religious diversity.
The statement illustrated that the European Union appreciates the commitment of the Iraqi government to protect and improve the situation of people belonging to communities in the country, including the Yazidi community.
Borrell called on the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to adhere to the Sinjar Agreement, appoint a mayor for Sinjar, and provide basic civil services, including the employment of 2,500 Iraqis.
The statement stressed that the European Union welcomes the adoption of the Yazidi Female Survivors Law.
The statement added that the European Union called for facilitating improved access to compensations provided for in the law to ensure its full implementation.
The European Union welcomed the Yazidi land ownership decree approved by the Iraqi government in December 2022.
