Iraq reopens its embassy in Libya after decade of closure
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday the reopening of the Iraqi embassy in Libya after a decade of closure.
The spokesperson of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, Ahmed Al-Sahaf, said in a statement that the step comes following directions from Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein to provide services to the Iraqi community in Libya, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry confirmed that it will work to develop bilateral relations and arrange visits by senior diplomats between Baghdad and Tripoli in the coming period.
Al-Sahaf stressed Iraq’s support for international efforts to restore security and stability in Libya and its eagerness to adopt policies that meet the aspirations of the Libyan people.
The reopening of the Iraqi embassy in Libya will help Iraq activate its political and diplomatic role to serve the interests of the two countries and will enable the Iraqi government to provide consular services to the Iraqi community in Libya.
The Iraqi embassy in Tripoli has been closed for a decade because of the security developments in Libya.
Several countries, including Iraq, closed their embassies in Tripoli with the escalation of military tensions between the Libyan parties in 2014.
