 Iraq seeks UN assistance to overcome challenges

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, stressed his country’s need for advice and support from the United Nations to overcome many challenges, according to a press statement issued by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.

The statement elaborated that Hussein received the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and other UN officials.

During the meeting, Hussein indicated that the Iraqi government is able to achieve success despite the existence of security challenges inside the country, the statement explained.

Hussein stressed the importance of the UN role in providing assistance and advice, especially since Iraq still needs expertise and assistance from the United Nations, which can achieve a qualitative change, the statement elaborated.

Both sides discussed the effects of climate change and water scarcity in Iraq, the statement clarified.

Hussein mentioned that a high-level delegation from Iraq will participate in the United Nations 2023 Water Conference that will be held at UN Headquarters in New York next March.  

DiCarlo affirmed that the United Nations is committed to assisting Iraq in facing security challenges, especially since Iraq has a lot of capabilities to face security and economic challenges, and it is still an essential partner of the United Nations, the statement added.

DiCarlo also stressed the importance of promoting dialogue in the Gulf region and the Middle East, as dialogue would enhance security and stability and reflect positively on the relations between countries of the region.
