Iraq to end UNAMI mission due to improved stability

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, cited the country’s political and security stability as the justification for his government’s proposal to the UN Security Council to terminate the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
Al-Sudani’s remarks took place during his meeting on Sunday with the Special Representative of the US Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the UNAMI, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The Iraqi Prime Minister indicated that the Iraqi government will keep working with UN international agencies in support of the government’s agenda and development objectives, citing developments in infrastructure reconstruction and economic reform as well as the growing capabilities of the Iraqi armed forces.
The Iraqi government recently asked the United Nations to end UNAMI’s mission, which has been ongoing for more than 20 years, by the end of 2025, considering that it is no longer necessary in light of the country’s notable progress towards stability.
UNAMI is a special political mission established in 2003 under UN Security Council Resolution 1500, at the request of the Iraqi government, and its role expanded significantly in 2007 under Resolution 1770.
