Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, confirmed on Monday that Iraq tried to open channels of dialogue between Syria and the Arab countries.

Hussein’s statement took place during his participation in a ministerial meeting held in the Jordanian capital, Amman, to discuss Syria’s return to the Arab League.

“We see the Arab and Gulf approach to breaking the stalemate as a brave step, and out of our belief that understanding comes within a unified Arab framework, we have always tried to find a proper way to open channels of dialogue between Syria and the Arab countries,” Hussein said.

The Iraqi Foreign Minister clarified that Iraq called for Syria’s return to its seat in the Arab League, adding that it is time for the Arab League to take its positive role regarding the Syrian issue to serve the common interests.

Amman hosted on Monday a meeting attended by the foreign ministers of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Egypt, and Syria.

The meeting is a continuation of the consultative meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt, which was hosted by Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on April 14.

A statement issued by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry confirmed that this meeting is based on the communications these countries made with the Syrian government and the Jordanian initiative to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

Syria’s membership in the Arab League was suspended over Damascus’s way of dealing with the protests broke out in 2011.
