Iraq, Turkey discuss security coordination

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, confirmed on Tuesday that Iraq has taken several measures at the border strip with Turkey.

Al-Sudani’s remarks took place during his meeting with the Turkish Minister of Defense, Yasar Guler, and the Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Army, Metin Gurak, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Along with discussing the significance of enhancing security cooperation to promote stability in both countries, the meeting also covered the relationship between the two neighbors.

Al-Sudani emphasized that Iraq has taken numerous steps to uphold the constitutional principles that forbid using Iraqi territory to launch attacks on neighboring countries, particularly along the border between Iraq and Turkey. He also highlighted that Iraq has rejected compromising its sovereignty.

In order to establish the stability needed for significant projects such as the strategically important Development Road—which consists of railways and highways connecting the Al-Faw Grand Port in Basra with the southern Turkish border—the Iraqi Prime Minister emphasized the significance of preserving security in Syria, given its connection to the national security of both Iraq and Turkey.

Guler conveyed his country’s desire to maintain cooperative relations with Iraq and its eagerness to coordinate with Iraq in intelligence and the fight against terrorism.
