Iraqi authorities check Mosul Dam following Turkey’s earthquake
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Crisis Management Cell of the Joint Operations Command in Iraq announced the results of its visit to the Mosul Dam, to find out how the dam is affected following the devastating earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey two weeks ago.
The spokesperson for the Joint Operations Command, Tahsin Al-Khafaji, stated on Monday that the aim of the visit is to reassure citizens about the safety of the Mosul Dam, which is operating at its full capacity.
Al-Khafaji, in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), explained that the visit is part of the directives of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani to ensure the safety of the dam and the readiness of the forces stationed in the area.
Al-Khafaji confirmed that Mosul Dam is safe and it was not affected by the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria.
Al-Khafaji pointed out that the counter-terrorism units stationed near the dam provide full security protection, confirming that they are trained forces with high capabilities.
A devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck southern Turkey and northern Syria on February 6. The aftershocks of the earthquake reached other countries in the region, and were felt by residents in Lebanon and Iraq.
The earthquake in Turkey and Syria caused severe damage to thousands of buildings, including schools, health care facilities and other public infrastructure such as roads, airports, ports, gas stations and power networks, and hundreds of aftershocks were recorded.
