Iraqi FM confirms government’s eagerness to protect human rights
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, confirmed on Monday that the government is eager to promote and protect human rights, according to a statement cited by the state news agency (INA).
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry mentioned in a statement that Hussein received the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, in Baghdad, where they discussed the cooperation between Iraq and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The statement explained that the two officials talked about the effects of climate change on human rights in Iraq, Iraq’s efforts to promote women’s rights, the empowerment of women, freedom of expression, and the government’s efforts to achieve justice for all Iraqis.
Hussein also stressed that the government is keen to promote human rights, especially after many years of dictatorship and successive crises that took place in Iraq.
Turk expressed his appreciation for Iraq’s efforts to promote and protect human rights, showing his readiness to provide all kinds of support and assistance to Iraq.
Turk also met on Sunday with Iraq’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammed Al-Halbousi, where they discussed forming the Human Rights Commission, according to INA.
