Iraqi FM confirms Yemeni issue concerns Iraqi politics

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, stated on Sunday that the Yemeni issue is one of the concerns of Iraqi politics, stressing the need to end the ongoing conflict between the people in Yemen, according to a press statement issued by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.
The statement elaborated that Hussein met with the Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, on the sidelines of his participation in the preparatory foreign ministers meeting for the Arab League summit taking place in Algeria.
The meeting addressed the bilateral relations between the two countries, and the vital interests that both sides hope to promote to meet the aspirations of their people, the statement mentioned.
The statement indicated that Hussein expressed Iraq’s interest in the course of events in Yemen, and stressed the need to end the conflict that has been going on for several years between the people of Yemen.
“We are ready, given Iraq’s geopolitical position, to provide everything that would end the war,” Hussein explained.
Hussein emphasized that the Iraqi stance supports dialogue between all parties in Yemen, noting that the situation in Yemen affects the regional security.
Mubarak confirmed that the Yemeni government is seriously trying to reach a peace agreement and end the conflict in Yemen. He also stressed the need not to interfere in Yemeni internal affairs to avoid exacerbation of the crisis and an escalation of violence, the statement added.
The Ansar Allah group (Houthi movement) controlled most of the governorates in central and northern Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa, since September 2014. A Saudi-led coalition launched military operations in March 2015, to help the Yemeni army restore those areas from the grip of the Houthis.
According to the United Nations, the war in Yemen claimed the lives of 377 thousand people until late 2021, and inflicted losses on the Yemeni economy estimated at 126 billion USD, leaving 80 percent of the Yemeni people in need of humanitarian aid.
