Iraqi FM describes 25th Gulf Cup as non-traditional diplomacy

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, confirmed his country’s endeavor to benefit from the 25th Gulf Cup to bring together Arab countries, describing it as ‘non-traditional diplomacy,’ according to a press statement issued by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.
The statement elaborated that Hussein met with the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum held in Davos in Switzerland.
Both officials discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as the regional situations in the Gulf region and the Middle East, the statement mentioned.
The southern Iraqi governorate of Basra is hosting the 25th Gulf Cup championship that started on January 6 and will last until January 19.
Hussein stressed the depth of the relations between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, indicating that Iraq is seeking to strengthen its relations with the Gulf states in general and Iraqi-Saudi relations in particular, because of their strategic importance, the statement elaborated.
Hussein added that Iraq is trying to benefit from the non-traditional diplomacy in the 25th Gulf Cup as an occasion to bring together the Gulf countries.
The Saudi Foreign Minister expressed his appreciation for providing this opportunity to exchange views on the Iraqi-Saudi relations and the latest events in the region.
Al Saud expressed Saudi Arabia’s support for the Iraqi government’s efforts aimed at promoting democracy and prosperity for Iraq.
Al Saud stressed that Iraq’s geographical location and available resources make it an important country in the region and enhance its regional role.
Al Saud also emphasized the need to strengthen the economic relations between the two countries, and pointed out that Saudi companies are ready to invest in the Iraqi economy.
The first official session of the 53rd edition of the World Economic Forum kicked off in the Swiss city of Davos on Monday, in the presence of many prominent figures who shape the global politics and the business world.
The World Economic Forum is held on the theme, ‘Cooperation in a Fragmented World,’ between January 16 and January 20.
More than 2,700 prominent officials from 130 countries, including 50 heads of state or government are participating in the World Economic Forum this year.
