Iraqi FM discusses cooperation with NATO Secretary General
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, met on Monday with the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, at the NATO headquarters in the Belgian capital, Brussels, according to a statement issued by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.
The meeting addressed the cooperation between Iraq and NATO, as well as issues of common interest, the statement mentioned.
Both sides talked about the training programs and capacity building provided in cooperation with the NATO training mission in Iraq, in addition to the security situation in the region.
Hussein praised the efforts of NATO in supporting the Iraqi forces and the capacity-building programs provided through the NATO Mission in Iraq (NMI), to support Iraqi security institutions, especially during its war against ISIS.
The Iraqi minister stressed the need to continue providing advisory and training programs to the Iraqi security forces, as well as the need to continue consultations with the Iraqi authorities to develop common visions and to set priorities.
Stoltenberg expressed the keenness of NATO to provide training programs in order to build the capabilities of the Iraqi security and military forces, in full consultation with the Iraqi government, which contributes to strengthening Iraq’s efforts to achieve stability and prevent the return of ISIS terrorists.
The Secretary General of NATO appreciated the role and professionalism of the Iraqi security forces, stressing the NATO’s readiness to continue cooperation with the Iraqi government.
