Iraqi Foreign Ministry welcomes joint Syrian-Saudi statement

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed on Thursday the joint Syrian-Saudi statement, noting that Iraq welcomes any efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis, according to a statement issued by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.

The statement mentioned that the Iraqi Foreign Ministry welcomes the joint Syrian-Saudi statement issued at the end of the visit of the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Faisal Al-Miqdad, to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

The statement indicated that Iraq looks forward to the efforts of the two countries which enhance solidarity between both countries and serve the political work of Arab countries.

“Iraq welcomes any efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis, and we strongly support putting an end to this crisis through peaceful means,” the statement clarified.

“We express our readiness to coordinate with the countries of the world to support Syria’s return to the Arab League, and we will spare no effort to participate in everything that would end the crises in the region,” the statement added.

The spokesperson of the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Al-Sahaf, confirmed on Wednesday that Iraq still supports Syria’s return to the Arab League.

“Iraq is still supporting Syria’s return to its seat in the Arab League… the integration of the Arab house is positively reflected on its parties,” Al-Sahaf said.

On Tuesday, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) called for a meeting to discuss the possibility of Syria’s return to the Arab League.

Saudi Arabia plans to invite the Syrian President, Bashar Al-Assad, to the Arab League summit in May.

The Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Faisal bin Farhan, is expected to travel to Damascus in the coming weeks to officially invite Al-Assad to attend the summit.

Media outlets emphasized that Syria and Saudi Arabia agreed to open their two embassies after more than ten years of severing relations.
