Iraqi government reopens Baghdad’s Green Zone

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi government announced it will reopen roads and tunnels in the Green Zone in the center of the capital, Baghdad, starting from Sunday to reduce traffic congestion, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

An official in the Prime Minister’s office explained that the concerned authorities in Baghdad was directed to reopen several roads and tunnels in the Green Zone based on directives of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani stated in the government program, INA reported.

The official elaborated that the plan is implemented starting from 5 a.m. on Sunday, INA mentioned.

The Iraqi official indicated that only passenger vehicles will be allowed pass until 7 p.m. through the roads and tunnels that are reopened. He added that trucks would not be allowed to pass.  

A security source in Baghdad announced in mid-December that security forces closed the entrances to the Green Zone.

The source clarified that the closure was due to protests organized by nearly 200 employees demanding to have full time job contracts.
