Iraqi judiciary, US Treasury discuss sanctions on Iraqi firms
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Supreme Judicial Council and the US Department of the Treasury discussed on Monday the sanctions imposed on Iraqi companies.
The President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, received in Baghdad the US Department of the Treasury’s Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson, the Charge d’Affaires of the US Mission in Iraq, David Berger, and the Judicial Attaché at the US Embassy in Iraq, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.
A statement issued by the Supreme Judicial Council revealed that the two sides reviewed the legal measures and sanctions issued by the US Department of the Treasury against Iraqi people and companies.
The United States announced sanctions last week on Iraqi low-cost airline Fly Baghdad, saying it provided assistance to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards while also targeting the leaders of a pro-Iranian Iraq militia for sanctions.
Fly Baghdad was forced last Monday to cancel several of its flights from Baghdad International Airport a few hours after the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the carrier.
The company denounced the US Treasury’s decision, considering it not based on any material or moral evidence that could convict the company.
Fly Baghdad further stated that the Iraqi government, through the Ministry of Transport and the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA), had been directly supervising it for years.
The Iraqi carrier demanded substantial proof from the US Treasury Department and confirmed that it will take legal action to obtain material and moral compensation since the decision was made based on false and misleading information.
