Iraqi PM inaugurates metal factory in southern Iraq

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, inaugurated on Saturday a rolling mill in the southern Iraqi governorate of Basra to produce metal bars and sheets.
The inauguration of the rolling mill took place during Al-Sudani’s visit to Basra governorate to open industrial projects, including fertilizer factories, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The Iraqi Prime Minister commended the work that led to operating and renovating these industries, viewing them as a significant turning point in the government’s ‘Year of Achievements.’
Al-Sudani said that foreign financial institutions observed the development in Iraq’s non-oil sector, indicating that it reached six percent, which is a promising and good figure that can be increased.
The Prime Minister of Iraq confirmed that Basra no longer only hosts Iraq’s ports and oil production but has become a hub for industries sponsored by both the government and the private sector, noting that it deserves to be described as the economic capital of Iraq.
The operation at the rolling mill, one of the factories of the State Company for Iron and Steel (SCIS), has been stopped since 2003.
During the past years, plans have been developed to carry out an integrated project to rehabilitate the iron and steel factories.
With a yearly production capacity of up to 500 thousand tons, the rolling mill primarily supplies the local need for rebar while adhering to the most recent international standards through an automated manufacturing process and programmed electronic control.
