Iraqi PM stresses Iraq’s positive role in settling regional crises
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, stressed on Wednesday that Iraq plays a positive role in settling regional crises, during his meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s press office.
The statement mentioned that Al-Sudani and Guterres discussed the bilateral relations between Iraq and the United Nations, and reviewed prospects for cooperation in issues related to the displaced and the required international role.
Both sides talked about ways to face climate challenges, as well as Iraq’s efforts to protect human rights and promote sustainable development, and Iraq’s pioneering role in reducing tensions in the region, the statement explained.
Al-Sudani expressed his appreciation for the work of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) and its efforts in assisting Iraq in various stages, stressing that Iraq overcame its political crisis, and is now focusing on economic and environmental challenges, the statement illustrated.
Al-Sudani indicated that Iraq defeated the terrorist groups of ISIS because of the cohesion of Iraqis and their belief in peaceful coexistence, adding that Iraq is now the key to resolve many of the region’s crises, and it plays a positive role in settling regional crises.
Guterres emphasized the support of the international community for Iraq in issues related to climate challenges and the displaced.
Guterres praised the government’s priorities and its focus on the fight against corruption, the statement clarified.
Guterres appreciated the decision of the Iraqi government to return the displaced to their original areas, describing it as a brave and positive decision.
Guterres stressed that the United Nations is ready to support the Iraqi government to face the current challenges, expressing optimism about the efforts made by the Iraqi government in all fields.
