Iraqi PM, Syrian President discuss security coordination
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – In a phone conversation on Wednesday, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, and the Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, discussed security coordination between the countries.
In addition to bilateral relations and issues of common interest, the two sides talked about strategies to confront the threats of remnants of terrorist groups and other security challenges, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The two leaders reviewed ways to promote cooperation in different areas, particularly the economic sector.
The discussion also included the latest developments in the region and the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.
During a meeting held in the Iraqi capital in mid-May, Al-Sudani and the Syrian Minister of Interior, Mohammad Khaled Al-Rahmoun, discussed strategies to enhance security cooperation between Iraq and Syria.
The meeting addressed the significance of boosting security cooperation between the two countries in different areas, particularly the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking.
In order to improve security in Syria and along the shared border and to combat terrorism, Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s willingness to collaborate with the Syrian Ministry of Interior to the fullest extent possible, noting that this collaboration will have positive repercussions for regional stability.
Al-Rahmoun commended the Iraqi Ministry of Interior for its efforts and the security measures it has put in place along the border between Syria and Iraq.
In a joint press conference following his meeting with Al-Rahmoun, the Iraqi Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, announced reaching a security agreement between the two countries.
The Syrian Interior Minister also confirmed that a meeting for regional security cooperation will be held in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, next July.
