Iraqi police discover Iranian cruise missile failed to launch

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Following the US air strike that targeted a security site of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in eastern Baghdad on Thursday, killing commanders in the Al-Nujaba movement, the US Central Command announced on Friday that the Iraqi police in Babylon discovered on January 3 a land-attack cruise missile of Iranian design that failed to launch.
“The use of Iranian-supplied munitions by terrorist groups within Iraq and Syria endangers Coalition forces and local residents,” the US Central Command said via X, formerly Twitter.
“The Coalition is appreciative of the efforts of the legitimate security forces in Iraq for their efforts to prevent future attacks,” the US Central Command added.
The Iraqi government renewed earlier on Friday its commitment to the withdrawal of international coalition forces from the country.
The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, said on Friday that the government is assembling a committee to plan the withdrawal of the foreign coalition led by the United States from the country.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) mentioned in a statement that the Iraqi government is determining the date of the bilateral committee’s formation to arrange a permanent withdrawal of the international coalition forces from Iraq.
The United States launched counterattacks in Iraq last month in response to a drone strike by insurgents affiliated with Iran that left one US serviceman critically injured and two others wounded.
Since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas in October, US and international coalition forces in Iraq and Syria have been attacked more than 100 times, most often by a combination of missiles and one-way attack drones.
