Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi President, Abdul Latif Rashid, discussed on Tuesday issues of common interest with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, according to a press statement issued by the Iraqi Presidency.
The statement explained that Rashid met with Al Thani on the sidelines of the 31st Arab League summit held in the Algerian capital, Algeria.
The two leaders discussed ways to develop and enhance the bilateral relations between Iraq and Qatar, according to the statement.
Both sides also talked about regional and international issues of common interest, and highlighted the necessity of expanding horizons of cooperation in a manner that serves the stability in the region as well as the aspirations of the people for progress and prosperity, the statement added.
Rashid, following his election as the new Iraqi President on October 13, pledged to make every effort to ensure Baghdad’s strong relations with neighboring countries and the international community.
The summit was postponed several times before its date was confirmed on November 1, 2022. It was initially to be held in 2020, 2021 and finally March 2022, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed to November to coincide with the anniversary of the outbreak of the Algerian Revolution.
Leaders and representatives of 21 countries are participating in the summit which is the first since a number of countries normalized relations with Israel.
Arab foreign ministers concluded on Sunday their preparatory meetings in which they discussed several issues and decisions to be presented to the Arab leaders in the summit for approval.
