Iraqi president supports Egyptian proposal to stop war in Ukraine
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi President, Abdul Latif Rashid, expressed his support for the call of the Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, to stop the Russian-Ukrainian war.
During the speech he delivered in the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP 27) of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC), Rashid said that he supports the proposal of his Egyptian counterpart to stop the war in Ukraine.
“The United Nations Climate Change Conference is an important milestone in our efforts to confront climate challenges. The biggest challenge we are currently facing in our country is water scarcity,” Rashid stated during the conference.
Rashid explained that the water crisis exacerbated in Iraq with the lack of rain and drought, which significantly affected the agriculture.
“We are looking forward to cooperating with neighboring countries regarding the water issue. The water crisis in Iraq forced the authorities to reduce the cultivated lands,” Rashid clarified.
Rashid indicated that the problem of water scarcity is related to the phenomenon of desertification which threatens 40 percent of Iraq’s lands.
The Iraqi President highlighted the importance of exchanging experiences between countries in regards to climate change, stressing that Iraq will work to expand green spaces.
The Iraqi Presidency issued a statement on Sunday stating that Rashid arrived in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh to attend the UN Climate Change Conference.
