Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Spanish coach of the Iraqi national team, Jesus Casas, said that the team needs time to achieve the desired results.

The Iraqi team tied with the Omani counterpart, last Friday, in the opening match of the 25th Gulf Cup.

Iraq is hosting the 25th edition of the Gulf Cup championship from January 6 to January 19, with the participation of eight teams divided into two groups.

The Iraqi national team known as ‘Lions of Mesopotamia’ is preparing for the second round match against the Saudi team in Basra International Stadium next Monday.

Casas, in a press conference, said that the Iraqi team needs time to achieve positive results, stressing that there is a strong desire to win the 25th Gulf Cup.

Casas added that he and the Iraqi team are trying to follow in the footsteps of the Qatari national team that built a strong team over the years and succeeded to win the Asian Cup in 2019.

Iraq Football Association (IFA) announced in the beginning of November it reached an agreement with Casas to lead the training of the Iraqi national football team for the next period.

Casas, 49, worked as an assistant coach for the Spanish national team, under coach Luis Enrique, between 2018 and 2022, and as an administrative director for the youth teams.
