Japan, UN-Habitat to develop residential area in Mosul

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – To support returnees from Mosul, one of the most conflict-affected places, the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) will resume work with the Japanese government to create peacebuilding initiatives and long-term solutions in northern Iraq.

The new project will be developed in Mosul, more precisely in the residential area that the city’s master plan set aside for returnees, according to a statement released by UN-Habitat.

The development of social housing units with essential public infrastructure will be prioritized among the expected results.

To improve socioeconomic stabilization, recipients will also get vocational training and be included in a public outreach campaign on climate change adaptation. This outreach will focus on those who are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, such as women and children.

In coordination with the authorities of Mosul and Nineveh governorate, all activities are planned to be finished by January 2025.

The next project will be based on the knowledge gained from the Bab Sinjar Housing Complex in Mosul, which opened its doors in February 2023. With nine buildings totaling 324 apartments, all built by UN-Habitat and financed by the Japanese government, it aided 2,300 returnees.

The housing complex has been recognized by the Iraqi government and other humanitarian actors as one of the greatest examples of long-term solutions for displaced people.
