Jordan to provide Iraq with 40 megawatts of electricity

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq and Jordan signed on Sunday the first modification to the electrical energy sales deal.

The agreement aims to supply Iraq with 132 kilovolt of electrical energy, covering around 40 megawatts of Iraq’s energy demands.

The director general of Jordan’s National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), Amjad Rawashdeh, the director general of Iraq’s General Company for Electric Power Transmission/Central Region, Riyad Oreibi, and officials from both sides attended a ceremony to sign the deal.

NEPCO’s director general emphasized the agreement’s compatibility with the common objectives of Jordan and Iraq to create electrical interconnection.

The electrical interconnection is expected to improve electrical energy interchange and support both sides’ electrical system stability.

According to Rawashdeh, the current focus will be on completing banking processes in order to supply Iraq with around 40 megawatts in the first phase. Meanwhile, the second phase, which is planned for the third quarter of 2024, is being prepared accordingly.

After the second phase is finished, 150–200 megawatts of capacity should be given to Iraq. In the medium run, further connecting phases may raise the supply to 500 megawatts.
