KRG’s PM discusses Iraq’s sovereignty protection with International Coalition

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Prime Minister of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Iraq, Masrour Barzani, discussed on Sunday the importance of protecting the sovereignty and security of Iraq and the region with the Deputy Commanding General of the US-led coalition in Iraq and Syria, Andrew Garner, Rudaw News reported.
Both sides discussed the urgent need to solve the outstanding issues between the Kurdistan region and the federal government in Baghdad in accordance with the constitution, in addition to strengthening security and military coordination between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi army, Rudaw News mentioned.
Garner reviewed the tasks and activities of the international coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, and renewed the commitment of the international coalition to continue supporting the Kurdistan region, Rudaw News added.
The meeting between the two officials coincides with the visit of the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani, to Baghdad where he met with the leader of Al-Azm Alliance, Muthanna Al-Samarrai, and discussed political and security developments in Iraq.
Both Barzani and Al-Samarrai highlighted the importance of joint cooperation between Iraqi parties to overcome obstacles and support the efforts of the new federal government.
Areas in northern Iraq witnessed bombardment in the past few days carried out by Turkey and Iran against sites and headquarters of Kurdish factions opposing the two countries, which Ankara and Tehran say they are stationed in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
The Iraqi National Security Adviser, Qassim Al-Araji, mentioned on Sunday that there will be a supreme committee between Baghdad and the Kurdistan region to reach an understanding with Iran and Turkey regarding appropriate solutions to stop these attacks.
Al-Araji’s statement followed discussions held by the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, and leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Bafel Talbani, on Saturday, regarding the security of the Iraqi borders.
Last Wednesday, the Iraqi Ministerial Council for National Security announced a plan to redeploy Iraqi forces along the borders with Iran and Turkey.
