Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Transport announced on Monday the inauguration of an oil berth in the Khor Al-Zubair Port.

The General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI) opened an oil berth in the Khor Al-Zubair Port, one of the most important projects of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in the presence of the Japanese Ambassador to Iraq, Futoshi Matsumoto, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Transport Ministry.

With a 340-meter length, the oil berth becomes the longest in Iraq.

“It was built by Mitsubishi Corporation with a Japanese yen loan from JICA as a part of the second port sector project of Japan, totaling $376 million,” Matsumoto said via X, formerly Twitter.

“Japan has been supporting Iraqi ports, including Khor Al-Zubeir, Umm Qasr, and Al-Faw, since the 1970s. The first berth of Khor Al-Zubeir continues to be called the Mitsubishi berth,” the Japanese Ambassador explained.

“We have been working together with Iraqi port experts for the past 50 years, and we will continue to do so in the future, as we believe the Iraqi economy depends on the smooth export of its oil and the import of different necessary goods,” Matsumoto added.

The Khor Al-Zubair Port is located in the Arabian Gulf in the southern Iraqi governorate of Basra. It features sizable industrial zones that house businesses and labs, such as in the fertilizer and petrochemical industries.
